How to import a bank statement into QuickBooks Online
To import a bank statement into QuickBooks Online, go to Bank transactions → Link account → Upload from file and upload a QBO, QFX or CSV file. Intuit limits uploads to 350 KB and 1,000 lines, and a CSV must have 3 columns (Date, Description, Amount) or 4 (Date, Description, Credit, Debit). If you only have a PDF, convert it first.

When a bank feed is missing transactions or does not reach back far enough, you can upload a transaction file. These steps follow Intuit's help articles.
1. Convert the statement
Open the converter, drop the PDF and confirm the badge says Reconciled. Then download either:
- QBO (Web Connect) — no column mapping needed; or
- QuickBooks CSV — Date, Description, Amount, with the date format you choose.
2. Upload in QuickBooks Online
- Go to Bank transactions (in newer menus: All apps → Accounting → Bank transactions).
- Select the account tile if you see one, then open the Link account dropdown and choose Upload from file.
- Drag in the .qbo or .csv file and select Continue.
- Choose the QuickBooks account the transactions belong to (or add a new bank account), then Continue.
- For CSV only: match the columns (Date, Description, Amount) and confirm the date format.
- Select the transactions to import, then confirm.
- Review the imported lines in the For review tab, then categorise or match them.

Common errors and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| File too large | Upload one statement month at a time (limit 350 KB / 1,000 lines). |
| Dates imported wrongly (e.g. 03/04 read as April 3) | Re-export with the date format QuickBooks shows during mapping, and select the same format there. |
| CSV rejected | Intuit asks for no zero values in amount cells, no word "amount" in Credit/Debit headers, and one consistent date format. The QuickBooks CSV export already follows these rules. |
| Duplicates after importing | Exclude lines already brought in by the bank feed in the For review tab; check the date range before importing. |
| QBO file refused | Use the QuickBooks CSV export instead. |
Bank-specific download formats
Before converting, check whether your bank already offers the file you need and how far back: US bank statement format guide (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, Capital One, U.S. Bank, PNC, Truist, TD Bank (US), American Express, Discover, Chime, Ally Bank, SoFi).
Frequently asked questions
Should I use QBO or CSV for QuickBooks Online?
Intuit suggests a QBO file. It needs no column mapping. If a QBO upload fails, the 3-column CSV is the fallback and works with any bank.
Can I import more than 90 days?
Yes. Uploaded files are not limited to the bank feed's history; convert and upload each older statement separately.
Does this work for credit card accounts?
Yes. Choose the credit card account in step 4. In the files, charges are negative and payments positive.
Is my bank statement uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is opened and converted by JavaScript running in your browser tab (using Mozilla's open-source pdf.js library). The file is not sent to CSVLedger or anyone else. You can confirm this in your browser's developer tools: the Network tab shows no request containing your file.
