American Express statement formats: CSV, QFX, QBO and PDF
American Express says you can download recent activity and the past six billing statements to Quicken, QuickBooks or as a CSV file through your online account. When a period is outside that window, or you only have the PDF, CSVLedger converts the American Express PDF statement to Excel, CSV, QBO or Xero CSV in your browser and checks the totals against the printed balances.

What a American Express PDF statement contains
Credit card statements must show, under Regulation Z (12 CFR 1026.7): the previous balance, each transaction, credits, fees and interest, the closing date of the billing cycle and the new balance. On a card, purchases increase the balance and payments reduce it, the opposite of a checking account.
These are legal minimums, not a description of this bank's exact layout. We have not verified the layout against real statements from this bank.
Common pitfalls
- For anything older than six billing periods, the PDF statement is the source.
- Card amounts: a charge increases the balance owed. Check the sign convention your accounting software expects for a credit card account.
- Statements downloaded from online banking are text PDFs and convert directly. Scanned or photographed paper statements have no text layer and are not supported yet.
