Bank statement PDF to QBO (QuickBooks Web Connect)
CSVLedger creates a QuickBooks Web Connect .qbo file (OFX 1.02) from a PDF bank or credit card statement, with a unique FITID per transaction and the closing balance as LEDGERBAL. QuickBooks Online accepts QBO, QFX and CSV uploads up to 350 KB and 1,000 lines per file, according to Intuit. Conversion runs in your browser and is checked against the statement balance.

Generate a .qbo file from a PDF statement for QuickBooks "Upload from file" — useful for periods your bank feed no longer covers or for accounts with no feed at all.
When a QBO file is the right choice
QuickBooks Online imports transactions three ways: a live bank feed, an uploaded transaction file, or (more recently) an uploaded statement PDF or image. A transaction file is useful when you want to check the data before it enters the books — for example during catch-up bookkeeping or year-end clean-up — or when a bank feed only reaches back a limited time.
Compared with CSV, a QBO file needs no column mapping in QuickBooks and carries a unique ID (FITID) for each transaction.
How CSVLedger builds the file
- Transaction type is DEBIT for money out, CREDIT for money in, and CHECK for rows that look like numbered cheques.
- Payee (NAME) is a cleaned, shortened version of the description (max 32 characters, as OFX allows); the full text goes in MEMO.
- FITIDs are generated from the date, amount, description and row position, so re-exporting the same statement gives the same IDs.
- The file header uses a generic institution ID. QuickBooks Desktop checks Web Connect files against its list of participating banks and may refuse files it does not recognise; for Desktop, the CSV route can be more reliable.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between QBO, QFX and OFX?
All three are the same OFX data format. QBO is the extension QuickBooks uses for Web Connect files, QFX is the Quicken variant, and OFX is the generic name. They differ mainly in the header fields that identify the bank.
Does the QBO file work for credit cards?
Yes. Credit card statements are written as a credit card statement (CREDITCARDMSGSRSV1). Charges are negative and payments positive, which is how QuickBooks expects card transactions.
Will importing the same file twice create duplicates?
The FITIDs are stable for the same statement, which helps QuickBooks recognise transactions it has already seen. Still review the "For review" list in QuickBooks after any import.
QuickBooks says the file is too large. What can I do?
Intuit lists a 350 KB limit and up to 1,000 lines per upload for QuickBooks Online. Convert one statement month at a time.
Is my bank statement uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is opened and converted by JavaScript running in your browser tab (using Mozilla's open-source pdf.js library). The file is not sent to CSVLedger or anyone else. You can confirm this in your browser's developer tools: the Network tab shows no request containing your file.
